JustinJJS I have exactly the same problem with my Hitachi life studio 1TB USB external hard drive. The external hard drive has worked excellent on Windows XP/ window 7/Windows 8 and on Windows 10 upgrade. A few weeks ago I did a full install of Windows 10 and in the last few weeks I have been trying to find answers just as you have. I know my external hard drive works I can use it on my laptop using Windows 7 with no problems use it on the wife's Windows 8 with no problems the problem is with the Windows 10. I also had experienced that my CD DVD drive no longer able to play noncommercial DVD movies but yet they play on all the other operating systems.

Windows update return 'your device is up to date'. The hard drive has always been a little finicky considering to upgrade to a newer external hard drive I'm still able to use this one and two other PCs.
P.S. forgot to mention that I'm using a wireless keyboard and mouse and I am able to use USB drives.
